About This Game Conquest of the New World puts you in control of a native civilization or an expeditionary force from one of five European countries. Compete against other players in the hopes of establishing control of the New World during the sixteenth century. Not a game that simulates the actual discovery and colonization of the Americas, Conquest of the New World is generated at the beginning of each game and each New World and game is therefore unique.
Your job is to explore the New World, establish thriving colonies, produce and trade goods and eliminate your enemies or defend your claims from your opponents. Each player sets his own objectives for each game. For some players, winning the game may primarily involve finding lots of new landmarks in the New World and establishing many colonies. The Deluxe Edition adds several new features to the game.
The latter is the easiest option to use since it allows you to focus your efforts on your explorers and leave the colony to develop on its own. However, just because the colony is on auto-build doesn't mean you'll never have to do anything to it. For example, it's wise to manually develop your army and take an active role in deciding which units to create.
Often the computer will not make a cavalry or artillery unit and these are very important factions of your army. Conquest of the New World can be a very long and detailed adventure or a short and ferocious battle. The Deluxe Edition adds more detailed diplomacy, natural wonders, lets you preset colonies and create your own populations.
If you love long games that you can really sink your teeth into so to speak , then this is a game you must own. You can create your own New World regardless of what history dictates.
Gameplay is incredibly addictive and you'll not grow tired of it due to the numerous options available. By playing the game, you can get an idea of the excitement, wonder and fear that settlers must have felt when first traveling to the New World.
Graphics: From a distance, the graphics of the different people and buildings are fairly detailed. But, if you zoom in on the settlement, you can witness finely detailed graphics of the different characters moving around and working. The only problem is that when you zoom in, the buildings and people look good but the grass and surrounding area is just a blur. Sound: The realistic sounds of hammers pounding and people talking in the town square are nicely done. Also, when you're in the battle mode, the screams and gunshots are excruciating.
Although there is no music, the sounds alone really support the game well. Enjoyment: This is one of the most addictive games I've ever played. The mystery of what will happen next keeps you playing for hours on end! Also, it's fun to go into battle with the other countries and the battle mode at the beginning of the game lets you fight a single battle to your own specifications!
Replay Value: Once you conquer the world with one country, you have five more to master. For the strategy lover, Quicksilver has tried to give you the best of all worlds. In the exploration phases ofCNW, it is almost like Civilization , where you move around in the main map view. When you get into the actual warfare, the view changes dramatically. You are taken immediately to the combat grid. Here you will see each member of your troops. Usually, you will have leaders, infantry men, cavalry and artillery.
You swap turns with the computer or other players in the multiplayer games , moving your men around the various squares and shooting upon the enemies' troops.
You can attain victory by achieving any of three goals: You can either kill everyone, force the enemy to retreat, or occupy the same square as the enemy's flag. To do this you will try to advance on the enemy without exposing your flag. The warfare is realistic, in the sense that if you go into the combat outnumbered, there's a good chance that you won't walk away from it. The combat animation is very cool, as your men advance and attack with the sounds of gunfire and the outcries of the dying ringing in your ears.
It may take you a while to figure out what the most beneficial way to approach the enemy is. Keep in mind that you do gain advantages if you flank the enemy, or if you attack with your cavalry on the same turn that you have moved them. They get an attack bonus for charging. The developers of CNW were nice enough to actually let you practice your combat skills at the beginning of the game, before you actually have to put your men's lives on the line.
They have included an option off the first screen that allows you to hone your combat skills by allowing you to pick any of the nationalities to fight with against any of the other nationalities in the game.
This is essential if you want to be prepared to take on the computer, or better yet, your buddies in a multiplayer game.
Even when I didn't have time to sit down and play out a whole game, I could start up a mini-war and practice my troop movements. One thing about the combat in this game: if you enter into it unwisely, the enemy can easily decimate your troops.
So play it safe Installation was pretty much trouble-free, except that I had to mess around before I could play CNW inside Windows Finally, I right-clicked on the Conquest icon and selected properties from the drop-down menu. Then I selected the program tab. If playing against the computer just doesn't cut it for you, Conquest of the New World has network capabilities built into it.
Up to 6 players can compete over a network or modem as England, France, Spain, Holland, Portugal, or even the native Indians. In addition to this, they have also just released a patch that makes playing via email another possibility.
These multiplayer options, as well as the ability to dynamically create new worlds by specifying what percentage of land, water, etc.
