We saw maybe six or seven sights around the town, walking about a block or so in between. It was very informative and interesting! I learned a ton about the town and witch hysteria that I had either never learned in school or forgotten over the years. I would highly recommend this tour to any visitors to Salem! Heather J. Up next is the graveyard where most of the witch trial victims are buried.
Ironically, this is also the final resting place of the chief investigator during those trials, who directly caused many deaths. At the corner of the cemetery is the Grimshawe House, once home to a trio of famous sisters you may have heard of: the Peabodies.
The path takes you next to the old Town Hall. There's a little-known secret about this place, though--supposedly, it sits atop miles of secret underground tunnels! At the Joshua Ward House, up next, you'll get a glimpse of what remains of the residence once belonging to Sheriff George Corwin, who signed the arrest and execution warrants of those accused of witchcraft. Next, you'll come to an unassuming restaurant which occupies seriously historic ground--this land was once owned by one of the witch trial victims, and the building later became the spot where Alexander Graham Bell made the first ever phone call to the general public.
After that, you'll arrive at St Peter's Episcopal Church, which sits on land the town confiscated after the owners, accused of witchcraft, skipped town. The next intersection you reach used to be the site of the jail where those accused of witchcraft were kept. Conditions here were so poor that some died in their cells. Another jail awaits you right afterwards, although this one has been converted to a bunch of luxury apartments.
Still, residents say the old inmates linger in spectral form. Corey was another victim of the trials, and was later immortalized by Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. Then you'll pass by an impressive statue of Roger Conant, Salem's founder and first governor, as well as the Witch Museum, filled with all sorts of deep-dive info about the trials and the surrounding mass hysteria.
One optional stop takes you to the Gedney House, a perfect example of the peculiarities of colonial architecture. Another detour brings you to the Broad Street Cemetery, where Sheriff Corwin ended up after suffering a mysterious heart attack. The next optional stop is the Ropes Mansion, the former home of a wealthy Salem resident who became the center of a bitter distrust in the midst of a smallpox epidemic.
After that is the so-called Witch House. Once home to Judge Jonathan Corwin, who presided over some of the witch trials, it is one of very few buildings still standing from that era.
Next on the optional route is the John Bertram House, one of the oldest assisted living facilities in the entire country. The Melba apartments, up next, are supposedly home not only to secret smuggler tunnels, but also a specter who watches passersby from a window. She is an 8th grade Civics teacher and loves sharing her knowledge of history with others. Her B. Our tour guide, Beth, was amazingly knowledgeable and was able to bring Salem's history to life with gripping stories about Salem's merchant ship past, haunted locations and the witch trials.
Beth took care to not only show us the iconic places of Salem, she delved into the details about the people, beliefs, world views and ordeals that faced late to mid Salem. With this backdrop, the witch trials era was put into a context that made it actually make sense! A truly memorable experience that was the highlight of our trip to Salem this weekend. Thank you Beth. This tour was a little bit of everything: history, haunted stories, architecture, movie locations.
You get the best bang for your buck. Truly the highlight of our trip! I can't recommend it enough. I'll be honest. We talked about it all through dinner and kept referring back to it while we were in Boston. Beth was so good! She has a masters? You never feel rushed or like you're asking too many questions. She is patient and so informative. And it's not just about the witch trials, there is a lot about Salem.
It's a beautiful place. I highly recommend this tour!! I had absolutely NO complaints. Thanks Beth!! We only had a limited amount of time in Salem, and after this wonderful walking tour we feel like we got a fantastic taste of the history of this captivating city.
Paige was a superstar tour guide. Funny, knowledgeable, and even threw a little dash of Hamilton into the proceedings. We saw so much, but never felt rushed.
