Although it's unknown if the newer software could have helped prevent the crash, Sumwalt said it "would have given them a greater opportunity to avoid the crash. Another factor was a smart "callout" that would have notified the pilots when the plane had reached feet above the ground. That automatic callout was not activated by the pilots.
Sumwalt said there is a requirement for a system to have the automatic callouts, but the operators are not required to install it.
He compared that to requiring seatbelts in a car but not requiring people to wear them. They have guys running around with clip or it in stopwatches to make sure if an airplane is a minute later, someone will be held accountable for it," Sumwalt said. The smart callouts and updates to software could have possibly prevented this accident.
